Cold Brew Heaven

I’m taking a break from Instant Pot recipes to talk about cold brew, that delightful, silky-smooth concoction of slow-brewed coffee that has gotten me so addicted at Starbucks.

I love my coffee. I love it so much that if it’s a good-quality, I normally drink it straight-up black, no enhancement needed. But cold-brew coffee is something else entirely, with nearly 70 percent less acidity than hot coffee. The lower acidity not only means smoother flavor, but more kindness to your tooth enamel and your stomach. Quite simply, it’s more of everything you love about coffee, and a lot less of what you don’t like.

To save a little money on what could easily be a $25 weekly habit, I thought I’d try out a home cold-brew system. I went for the simplest system, which also turns out to be one of Amazon’s top-rated cold-brew coffee systems. The Cold Brew Coffee Maker with Flip Cap Lid by County Line Kitchen is a wonderfully simple affair that is nothing more than a Mason jar, gasket, filter, and flip-top lid, all of which is completely dishwasher safe.

This is the two-quart-jar version. You can see that I’m going to have to brew more very soon. Remember that this is a concentrate intended to be diluted with ice, water, cream, or whatever suits you. Decaf beans work very well, too.

Since I had no beans to grind when I first used the unit, I went ahead and filled the filter with regular old Chock Full O’ Nuts drip-grind coffee. Twenty-four hours later I had a beautiful, smooth coffee concentrate that was absolutely wonderful on ice, toted to work in my stainless-steel Thermo Flask, which keeps my drinks cold and ice intact all day long.

If you want hot coffee, the manufacturer recommends a 1:1 ratio of concentrate with boiling water.

The one problem with using drip-grind coffee is that it tends to kind of stick together in the filter, so you’re not quite getting the full benefit of the brewing process. For my next batch, I purchased the JavaPresse Manual Coffee Grinder The last thing I wanted was a new, space-hogging, plug-in appliance, so this one fit the bill. A coarser grind provides more space inside the filter and bean surface area for the water to get through, making for a stronger brew.

I also got a little fancy with my coffee, because sometimes you just need a little ice cream:

This was made with just 1/2 cup of coffee concentrate, a scoop of vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, and chocolate shavings. Quite nice little treat on a hot summer day.

  1. I’ve only tried french press and pour over to make hot coffee. This seems like a cool new thing to try, wish me luck!
